Using Satellite Technologies to Protect African Farmers from Climate Shocks - mastimirchi.com Using Satellite Technologies to Protect African Farmers from Climate Shocks

A farmer sorts tomatoes in Ethiopia. Photo: Stephan Bachenheimer / World Bank Farming can be precarious. This is especially true if you are poor and living in an area susceptible to climate shocks. In sub-Saharan Africa[1], with approximately 1 billion inhabitants, agriculture still accounts for roughly 64% of employment. Amazing solar 'wink' tells doomsday prediction was fallacy? Amazing solar 'wink' tells doomsday prediction was fallacy?
NASA engineers were amazed after clicking a latest picture of the Sun which appeared to be "winking at them". The image, which actually reveals sunspots caused by intense magnetic activity, was taken on December 22, just a few minutes after the Mayan doomsday prophecy proved to be wrong. Eruptions of magnetic activity on the solar surface appear to make the Sun 'wink' at the time many believed the world would end passed, the 'Daily Mail' reported. The picture, which was taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), has echoes of the famous image from the 1902 French film 'A Trip To The Moon', which is regarded as the first science fiction movie. "Despite reports of an ancient Maya prophecy, a mysterious planet on a collision course with Earth, or a reverse in Earth's rotation, we're still here," NASA spokesperson said. Read More >>

The US Geological Survey (USGS) has announced that Landsat 5 will be decommissioned over the coming months, bringing to a close the longest-operating earth observing satellite mission in history. By any measure, the Landsat 5 mission has been an extraordinary success, providing unprecedented contributions to the global record of land change. The USGS has brought the aging satellite back from the brink of failure on several occasions, but the recent failure of a gyroscope has left no option but to end the mission. Read More >>
